Abstract

Congenital cleft lip and palate are among the most common craniofacial anomalies, requiring long-term interdisciplinary treatment. This review summarizes data on the joint work of an orthodontist and a maxillofacial surgeon. The stages of diagnosis, planning and implementation of a combined approach are presented. Based on an analysis of recent literature, it is shown that the inclusion of a preoperative orthodontic stage, including nasoalveolar molding, improves anatomical conditions for surgical correction. The main methods of palatoplasty are reviewed with assessment of their effectiveness and complication rates. The reader will learn about modern criteria for choosing treatment tactics, as well as the role of orthodontic support at all stages of rehabilitation
