However, links between caries and dietary patterns in adults and older adults living in the European North of Russia remain insufficiently explored.</p> <p><bold>AIM</bold><bold>:</bold> This study aimed to examine associations between caries experience and dietary patterns in adult and older adult residents of Arkhangelsk Region.</p> <p><bold>METHODS</bold><bold>:</bold> We assessed the dental profile of 1586 participants in the observational cross-sectional study “Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Regions of the Russian Federation. Third Examination” (ESSE-RF3; ages 35–74 years). Participants reported the frequency of consumption of various foods and beverages. We evaluated hard dental tissues according to the methodology of the WHO Regional Office for Europe and recorded the DMFT index (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth), calculated as the sum of decayed (D), filled (F), and missing (M) teeth. To assess associations between the DMFT index and food-consumption frequency, we fitted simple and multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, education, income, occupation, marital status, smoking, and alcohol consumption.</p> <p><bold>RESULTS</bold><bold>:</bold> The DMFT index decreased with increasing frequency of vegetable consumption (fresh and cooked) (<italic>p</italic> <italic><sub>for trend</sub></italic> &lt; 0.001). Сaries experience was 1.8 points higher among participants who consumed bread and bakery products daily or almost daily than among those who consumed them less than once per week (<italic>p</italic> = 0.026), which was consistent with increasing caries experience as consumption frequency increased (<italic>p</italic> <italic><sub>for trend</sub></italic> &lt; 0.006). Caries experience decreased with higher plain drinking-water intake (<italic>p</italic> <italic><sub>for trend</sub></italic> = 0.008). The DMFT index among individuals consuming black tea more than 3 times per day was 2.7 points higher than among nonconsumers (<italic>p</italic> &lt; 0.001).</p> <p><bold>CONCLUSION</bold><bold>: </bold>Among Arkhangelsk Region residents aged 35–74 years, lower caries experience is associated with frequent consumption of vegetables and plain drinking water, whereas higher caries experience is associated with frequent consumption of bread and bakery products and black tea. These findings should inform population-level and individualized caries-prevention programs for adults and older adults.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p><bold>Обоснование. </bold>Исследования в разных странах демонстрируют связь кариеса зубов с потреблением продуктов питания. В то же время связи кариеса зубов с характером питания взрослых и пожилых людей Европейского Севера России изучены недостаточно.</p> <p><bold>Цель.</bold> Изучить связи между интенсивностью кариеса и характером питания у взрослого и пожилого населения Архангельской области.</p> <p><bold>Методы.</bold> Проведена оценка стоматологического профиля 1586 участников наблюдательного поперечного исследования «Эпидемиология сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний в регионах Российской Федерации. Третье обследование» — ЭССЕ-РФ3 (от 35 до 74 лет), у которых собирали данные о частоте потребления различных продуктов питания и напитков. Оценку состояния твёрдых тканей зубов проводили по методике Европейского бюро Всемирной организации здравоохранения и регистрировали при помощи индекса КПУ: сумма кариозных (К), пломбированных (П) и удалённых (У) зубов. Для определения связей между индексом КПУ и частотой потребления продуктов использовали простые и множественные линейные регрессии с коррекцией на возраст, образование, уровень дохода, род занятий, семейное положение, курение и потребление алкоголя.</p> <p><bold>Результат.</bold> Снижение индекса КПУ наблюдалось с повышением частоты потребления овощей, свежих и приготовленных (<italic>p</italic><sub>тренд </sub>&lt; 0,001). Интенсивность кариеса у лиц, ежедневно или почти ежедневно потребляющих хлебобулочные изделия, была на 1,8 выше, чем у тех, кто потреблял данные продукты реже 1 раза в неделю (<italic>p</italic> = 0,026), что согласовывалось с повышением интенсивности кариеса в связи с увеличением частоты потребления хлебобулочных изделий (<italic>p</italic><sub>тренд </sub>&lt; 0,006). Интенсивность кариеса уменьшалась при увеличении потребления питьевой воды (<italic>p</italic><sub>тренд</sub> = 0,008). Индекс КПУ у употребляющих чёрный чай более 3 раз в день был на 2,7 выше, чем у лиц, не употребляющих данный напиток (<italic>p</italic> &lt; 0,001).</p> <p><bold>Заключение. </bold>У жителей Архангельской области в возрасте от 35 до 74 лет относительно низкая интенсивность кариеса связана с высокой частотой потребления овощей и питьевой воды, повышенная интенсивность — с частым потреблением хлебобулочных изделий и чёрного чая.
