The authors present the results of controlled cliriico-microbiological studies of the antibacterial effect of different pol-yhexamethyleneguanidine hydrochloride (BIOPAG) concentrations on microflorafrom inflammatory nidi of 42patients with inflammatory maxillofacial diseases. The experiments showed that 0.1% to 0.05% BIOPAG concentrations were optimal when the preparation was used as a dental surgical antiseptic. In these concentrations BIOPAG's antibacterial activity was not inferior to that of chlorhexidine bigluconate, while its fungicide effectiveness was higher.

The authors substantiate a functional program that should be performed before orthopedic treatment and during a complex dental rehabilitation. Such a program is useful in differential diagnostics of muscular disrhythmias and changes in the contractility of various maxillofacial muscle groups. The authors show that the use of soft silicone splints after metaloceramic construction placement serves as a preventive measure in cases ofmyogenic disturbances, such as masticatory muscular hyper- andparafunction. According to the authors, successive multi-step orthopedic treatment is nec-essary to better the aesthetic and functional condition of the maxillofacial area.

The authors used 5% mexidol in treatment of patients with different salivary gland diseases; the main complaint of the patients was xerostomia, a feeling of dryness in the oral cavity. Sialometry of the greater and lesser salivary glands was performed to analyze the results of the therapy. Biochemical analysis of mixed saliva revealed substantial changes in catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutatione peroxidase, and total protein levels. External novocaine and lidocaine blockades with 5% mexidol led to positive results in 68% of the patients with xerostomia. The best results were achieved in patients with Henen-berg parotitis, sialadenosis, and chronic interstitial or parenchimatous parotites. Mono- or complex therapy with mexidol normalized lipidperoxidation and antioxidativeprotection, which was evident after mixed saliva analysis after the treatment. 32
