A holographic interferometric study of maxillary osteal tissue deformation in the area of supporting teeth depending on dental bridge length

Abstract

A large number of techniques had been used to define clinical criteria to choose the number of supporting teeth for dental bridges. The results obtained with the given technique demonstrated that not only supporting teeth, but also the entire skull up to its forehead part became deformed. The biggest and most even deformations of all the supporting teeth were found when long dental bridges (variant 1) were used. The most prominent local deformations in the area of supporting teeth expressed to the same degree were found when short bridges (variant 3) were used. The use of short console dental bridges (variants 3, 4, and 6) led to the biggest deformations only in the loaded support. Loading with variant 5 led to deformations in the loaded support area, which diminished as the distance from the place where the load was applied grew.

Experimental application of toothpaste with polytetrafluorethylene and hydroxyapatite to fill enamel surface defects

Abstract

Experiments performed on dogs and human teeth (extracted according to medical indications) demonstrated that application of toothpaste with 3% of polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) and 3% of fine-dispersed hydroxyapatite (HAP) fills both artificial hard tissue defects and natural enamel cracks with these elements. Hard particles contained in the paste and filling the hard tissue defects cannot be removed by rinsing with flowing water during six hours. The authors conclude that filling defects of dental hard tissues with hydrophobic PTEF and the mineral will increase colonial resistance of hard tissues to cariesogenic microorganisms.

Comparison of morphofunctional changes in the periodontium of Balb/c and C57Bl/6 mice under cold effect

Abstract

Intraspecific differences in the morphofunctional condition of the periodontium and immune system of Balb/c and C57Bl/6 mice under normal conditions and during adaptation to cold effect were studied. According to the morphological investigation and visual inspection of the periodontium, cold action led to periodontal inflammation in both Balb/c and C57Bl/6 mice, more pronounced in non-stress-resistant Balb/c mice. Stressful cold effect activates lipid peroxidation and changes the activity of antioxidative enzymes and immune organ reaction. These changes were also more prominent in Balb/c mice.

Abstract

The dynamics of osteal reparative processes in mandibular fractures in rats were studied when perftorane was applied as a part of complex lymphotropic antibacterial therapy. Perftorane improved bony regenerate blood circulation and increased the number of osteoblasts per unit of area, thus improving the process of bony tissue formation.

Experimental substantiation and clinical application of Er,Cr:YSGG laser in complex treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis

Abstract

In rats with "ligature" periodontitis an incision of the mucosa between the incisors reaching bony tissue was made either with a scalpel (controls) or using Er,Cr:YSGG laser Millennium in ablation mode with or without air-water mixture. The experiment demonstrates advantages of the application of laser with air-water mixture: less damage to the tissues; earlier vascular response; migration of leukocytes and fibroblasts. These factors favor the recovery of periodontal tissues. Clinical application of laser in surgical treatment of periodontitis demonstrated its higher efficacy, which manifested by a decrease in bleeding, a decrease in the depth of periodontal pockets, and a prolongation of the remission of inflammatory process.

Functional clinicoinstrumental diagnostics of the maxillodental system of patients with accelerated dental abrasion

Abstract

Twenty-five patients with generalized accelerated dental abrasion underwent clinicoinstrumental examination. Clinical functional analysis, instrumental analysis of plaster models in an articulator, electron axiography, and myotonometry were performed. All patients had higher than average angle of sagittal articular way, i.e. in spite of a prominent decrease in the movement of the front teeth the articular surfaces were intact. In 36% of the subjects, some functional changes such as dislocation of the intraarticular disk and masticatory muscle discoordination were found, which may be a consequence of accelerated dental abrasion.

Combined endovascular and surgical treatment of carotid paraganglioma

Abstract

Surgery is the only method to treat carotid paranglioma (CP) radically. Itraoperative blood loss may exceed two liters. It is not always possible to ligate the external carotid artery (ECA) due to the invasion of the tumor into the ECA wall. The authors suggest that preliminary endovascular embolization (EE) of blood vessels delivering blood to the tumor should be performed in order to minimize blood lost. The article describes the clinical case of a 18-year-old patient with CP, who underwent complex diagnostic imaging including ultrasound scanning with color mapping, spiral computed tomography with contrast enhancement, and selective carotid angiography, after which selective EE of the efferent vessels of CP was performed. After embolization of a branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery, going to the tumor's lower pole, and large branches supplying the tumor's upper pole from the initial segment of the occipital artery with polyvinylalcohol (PVA-300) and Embox hydrogel, a surgical intervention was performed: the tumor was removed, the outfalls of the tumor's proper arteries were sutured, and ECA was ligated. The intraoperative blood loss was 350 ml. The postoperative period was smooth. After 3.5 and 12 months the good result of the treatment remained.

Periodontal status in 35-44-yr-olds in various regions of Russia

Abstract

Periodontal diseases present one of the main factors of teeth loss. In order to evaluate periodontal status of Russian population, 8441 35-44-yr-olds from 40 regions of country were examined using CPI Index according to WHO criteria. Prevalence of signs of periodontal diseases among Russian population was 82%. Gingival bleeding occurred in 18%, dental calculus in 46%, periodontal pocket 4-5mm in 15%, periodontal pocket of 6 mm or deeper in 3%. The mean number of healthy sextants was 2.24; 1.28 sextants had signs of gingival bleeding, 1.44 had dental calculus, 0.37 had periodontal pockets 4-5 mm, 0.05 had periodontal pockets of 6 mm and deeper. There was a slight variation in periodontal status between different regions of Russia. The presented data can be used to monitor periodontal status of Russian population and to plan preventive programs.

Abstract

Dentists occupy the third place in the level of occupational morbidity, and locomotor system diseases present the main problem for dentists, which make many of them change their specialization. That is why most dentists see a masseur on a regular basis, go to a swimming pool, and do therapeutic physical exercises, but neurologists and rehabilitologists more and more often order manual therapy, a popular modern method to treat the spine, which in consequence even worsens the condition. The authors offer PNF-based stretching, a method developed according to working positions and the dentist's ergonomics, which makes it possible to compensate for the tonic tension of spinal and cervical muscles developing as a result of being in a working position for a long time, to reestablish the physiological stereotype of motion, and to prevent the development of chronic musculo-tonic pain syndrome.

Radiological examinations in diagnostics of maxillodental inflammatory diseases

Abstract

The main goal of the article is an attempt to improve radiological examination techniques used in diagnostics of maxillodental inflammatory diseases, and its main idea is to evaluate possibilities provided by new diagnostic techniques, and to illustrate methods and projections of conventional radiography, which is still used rarely in the dentist's practice. Of late, there have appeared a lot of new radiological diagnostic techniques, the most important of which is dental volume tomography developed thanks to digital technology. These techniques are able to seriously heighten the quality of diagnostics. Along with them there have been collected a significant material (465 observations) reflecting maxillodental inflammatory processes. Among tasks demanding fulfillment, the article covers the problem of differential diagnostics of odontogenic and non-odontogenic sinusites and lymphadenites, as well as improvement of the regimen of radiological diagnostics of the given pathology. The author considers that the use of the high informative value of radiological diagnostic techniques in the diagnosis of maxillodental inflammatory diseases by clinisists provides them with valuable information for cost- and time-effective diagnostics and quality treatment without high radiation exposure.
