Detection and parameters of galvanic pairs in the oral cavity in patients with orthodontic structures: diagnostic cross-sectional study

Background: Due to the widespread use of metal-ceramic crowns and bridges, the heterogeneity of the composition of structural materials, and the time variation of prosthetics, the relevance of research in the field of electrochemical manifestations in the oral cavity in the presence of metal-containing prosthetic structures does not decrease. Against this background, there are almost no publications on possible manifestations of galvanic syndrome in people with orthodontic structures in the oral cavity. Meanwhile, braces and orthodontic arches, retainers can be made of different metal alloys.; They can be combined with orthodontic metal crowns, screws and orthoimplants.
Aim: To analyze the electrical potentials of components of orthodontic structures in the oral cavity of young patients with dental anomalies.
Materials and methods: 31 patients with various dental anomalies were examined at the stages of treatment using braces. The measurements were carried out using the IVN-01 Pulptest – Pro devices and the Fluke 115 multimeter measuring device according to the methodology corresponding to the recommendations of the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry of the Borovsky Institute of Dentistry (I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University) The difference in the electrical potentials of the galvanic pairs was calculated, while the standard value was considered to be no higher than 50 mV.
Results: as a result of electrochemical measurements, the electrical potentials of braces, arches and retainers in carriers of orthodontic structures were recorded in the range of 140-385 mV (on average 150 + 8.9 mV). The most important indicator, the difference in electrical potentials when measuring the potentials of orthodontic equipment components, ranged from 20 + 0.6 to 206 + 11.1 mV (on average, 27.7 + 0.9 mV). At the same time, four of the surveyed (13.3%) had an excess electrical potential difference with an average value of 66 + 1.5 mV.
Conclusion: The presence of metal-containing orthodontic structures with a frequency of 13.3% may be accompanied by the appearance of an excess difference in the electrical potentials of the components of the braces.
