ANTIBATERIAL EFFECTS OF ZINC DURING APEX-PHORESIS

Efanov O.I., Tsarev V.N., Volkov A.G., Nosik A.S., Dikopova N.Z., Shpilko A.L., Tret’yakov A.A.

Abstract

This work was designed to study antibaterial effects of zinc used in apex-phoresis. The data obtained indicate that the application of zinc electrodes can not be recommended for the purpose of apex-phoresis because their antibacterial activity against the majority of pathogenic microflora species known to occur in the root canals of the teeth is much lower than that of the currently used silver-copper electrodes. Zinc should be used during apex-phoresis in the form of sulphate as a component of electrolyte solution for the moistening of the root canals. A 2% zinc sulphate solution was shown to produce a well-apparent antibacterial effect.

MORPHO-FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SPONGIOUS BONE TRABECULAE OF HUMAN CONDYLAR PROCESS

Slesarev O.V.

Abstract

A change in the anatomical position of the articular structures is known to alter strain transmission properties of the head of the mandible, cause adaptive rearrangement of its structural elements, and induce transformation of tissue trophic characteristics. These facts should be taken into consideration when choosing methods for the rehabilitation of the patients presenting with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases. It is concluded that caution is needed when using the methods based on the inhibition of the functional activity of TMJ constituent elements.

THE APPLICATION OF SCLEROSING THERAPY FOR THE COMBINED TREATMENT OF VASCULAR MALFORMATIONS OF THE HEAD AND THE NECK

Korotkikh N.G., Ol’shansky M.S., Stepanov I.V.

Abstract

The surgical treatment of vascular malformations of the head and the neck is fraught with a high risk of intraoperative bleeding and extensive postoperative cosmetic defects. Ninety four patients exhibited malformations of the low-speed type that corresponds to the venous and capillary form. Sclerotherapy was used in 16 patients with venous and capillary malformations of the head and the neck. Five of them were treated with the use of a novocaine-containing 70% alcohol solution, and the remaining 11 with aethoxysklerol at various concentrations. The use of sclerosing therapy for the management of low-speed malformations was shown to reduce the risk of bleeding during the subsequent surgical interventions. It is concluded that certain sclerotherapeutic modalities may be an alternative to surgery for the patients with extensive venous and/or capillary malformations. Specifically, the administration of a 1% aethoxysklerol for sclerotherapy of venous malformations of the head and the neck may have a good outcome with minimal complications.

CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS CO-MORBIDWITHKNEEJOINT OSTEOARTHRITIS:INDUCTION ANDPROLONGATION OF REMISSION, OUTCOMES OF THE TREATMENT

Trunin D.A., Movshovich B.L., Netesov A.F.

Abstract

In the present study the criteria of evidence-based medicine were applied for the estimation of the efficacy of two methods designed to induce clinical remission and its prolongation in the patients presenting with chronic periodontitis and concomitant knee joint osteoarthritis. Monotherapy with the use of the arthrofoon preparation containing ultralow doses of antibodies against tumour necrosis factor-alpha, the principal anti-inflammatory cytokine, was carried out during a period of up to 12 months. The data obtained were compared with the results of traditional "upon request" therapy in the patients who had refused to undergo treatment with arthrofoon and suffered exacerbation of clinical symptoms. The evaluation of the outcomes of both therapeutic modalities in terms of evidence-based medicine and revealed high efficacy of arthrofoon monotherapy for the treatment of combined stomatological and arthrological pathology.

PLANNING AND PERFORMING THE BALLOON SINUSLIFT PROCEDURE DURING PREPARATION FOR DENTAL IMPLANTATION

Ushakov A.R.

Abstract

The state of the maxillary sinusis was estimated in the patients with its low-set bottom in conjunction with the evaluation of the efficacy of the balloon sinuslift procedure in the course of preparation for dental implantation. Computer tomograms and outpatient medical records of 140 stomatological patients were available for the analysis. Eighteen (12,9%) of the patients were found to have contraindications of the local character for the balloon sinuslift at the time of examination. Fifty one patients had a minimal number of complications following this operation (n = 59). Specifically, the postoperative oedema was documented only in 3 (5.9%) patients while neither hematomas nor the release of the osteotropic material was documented. None of the patients reported painful sensation or the impairment of working capacity. A modification of the proposed method is described that allows to improve the conditions for the performance of balloon sinuslift in difficult of access regions (such as distal maxillary portions) and thereby to enhance the precision of the surgical manipulations

THE PROPERTIES OF THE GINGIVAL FLUID FROM THE PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH ACUTE GINGIVITIS AND CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS

Tsybikov N.N., Domanova E.T., Zobnin V.V., Ignatov M.Y., Maslo E.Y., Isakova N.V.

Abstract

In the present study involving 30 patients presenting with acute catarrhal gingivitis and chronic periodontitis, we measured the levels of immunoglobulins (IgM, IgA, IgE, total IgG and its subclasses) and cytokines (IL-1-beta, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha); in addition, the absorption capacity and phagocytic activity of intact neutrophils were determined after their incubation with the gingival fluid. The latter ’s coagulative and fibrinolytic properties were studied. It was shown that exacerbation of gingivitis is associated with enhanced activity of the gingival fluid that in its turn leads to the increase of the phagocytic number and phagocytic index, the levels of IgM, IgA, and IgG subclasses, IL-6 and TNF-alpha concentration. The gigngival fluid obtained from the patients presenting with acute gingivitis suppressed phagocytosis. It is concluded that the elevated proinflammatory cytokine levels, increased coagulative capacity and decreased fibrinolytic activity of the gigngival fluid are the common characteristics of acute gingivitis and chronic periodontitis.

SURGICAL TREATMENT OF THE PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH ALVEOLAR CREST NEOPLASMS

Shchipskiy A.V., Khripunkov V.A.

Abstract

The authors propose a method for the isolation of postoperative bone wounds in the alveolar crest region. It was shown that a wound dressing in the form of a silicone membrane creates the optimal conditions for bone wound healing in the mouth cavity up to its epithelization. This technically simple and cost-effective method is characterized by fairly well predictable results regardless of the size of the postoperative wound and other factors.

THE COMPARATIVE CHARACTERISTIC AND VALIDITY OF SUBJECTIVE METHODS FOR THE ESTIMATION OF THE DEGREE OF ANXIETY STRESS USED IN STOMATOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Milenin V.V.

Abstract

The objective of the present randomized observational study was to compare the efficacy of the visual-analog scales (VAS) and other tools (such as certain test-scoring systems) applied to the estimation of the degree of anxiety stress in the children ’s stomatological practice. The participants of the study were 356 children allocated to three groups and their parents. They were surveyed with the use of the VAS, STAIC, STAI, mYALE, DAS, and MAS anxiety scales. The latter two scales were specially developed for the group of recipients of the stomatological aid including young and adult patients. The mean age of the patients in groups 1, 2, and 3 was 4.86 +- 1,3; 9.76 +- 1.8, and 13.8 +- 2.1 years respectively. All the patients voluntarily received stomatological care. It is concluded that the VAS anxiety scale provides a useful objective tool for the estimation of the degree of dental phobia in the children aged above 7 years. The results of the present estimation fairly well correlate with those obtained with the help of other test-scoring systems.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE MAXILLOFACIAL INJURY EXEMPLIFIED BY THE SITUATION IN THE CITY OF STAVROPOL

Karpov S.M., Khristoforando D.Y., Shevchenko P.P., Sharipov E.M., Abidokova F.A.

Abstract

Diagnostics and treatment of combined maxillofacial and craniocerebral injuries remain the challenging problems in the modern stomatological practice. We have analysed 2,604 case histories accumulated at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of a Stavropol hospital during 5 years in order to estimate the proportion of craniomaxillofacial injuries among the totality of maxillofacial traumas. It was shown that most such injuries are diagnosed in young able-bodied subjects. Maxillofacial injuries frequently occur in conjunction with brain damage and tend to mask clinical manifestations of craniocerebral dtrauma. Such cases require specialized neurological treatment.

CHARACTERISTIC OF THE STOMATOLOGICAL STATUS AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE CONCURRENT EXOGENOUS FACTORS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEOPLASMS IN THE OROPHARYNGEAL REGION

Nurieva N.S.

Abstract

Late diagnostics of the tumors of the head and the neck is supposed to be due to the absence of oncological vigilance in the patients, their poor awareness of on precancer conditions, and rather rare visits to the dentist ’s office. Taken together, these circumstances account for the unsatisfactory condition of the mouth organs and tissues. Besides, the exogenous factors, such as residence at large industrial cities, smoking, and hazardous employment exert the adverse influence on the initial stomatologic status of the patients of this category.

THE INFLUENCE OF DENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ON THE STUDENTS' QUALITY OF LIFE

Khudyakova L.I.

Abstract

The objective of this paper was to analyse the life quality of 150 students aged between 17 and 25 years having confirmed diagnosis of dento-maxillary pathology. The control group was comprised of the students who didn‘t have stomatological disorders (150 subjects). The SF-36 questionnaire (Medical Outcomes Study Short Form) was used to obtain the data necessary for the comparison of life quality characteristics. The results of the study indicate that the students with and without dento-maxillary pathology were characterized by the virtually identical physical health (PH) component. At the same time, the deterioration of the quality of life in the patients with stomatological problems was significantly more pronounced when evaluated based on the scales that are designed to estimate psychic health.
